What’s in Your Water? Our Recommended R.O. System.
Moore County has excellent public water systems that typically meet EPA federal safety standards. Our water utilities do a great job treating and distributing clean water that is safe to drink.¹
However, like many communities across America, our local water contains trace amounts of certain contaminants that, while within legal limits, some families prefer to reduce even further.²
The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a nonprofit research organization, maintains a national tap water database showing what has been detected in water systems nationwide. Important note: EWG uses stricter health guidelines than EPA legal limits, so some contaminants they flag are still within federal safety standards.³
Here’s what EWG’s database shows for Moore County:
(2021-2023 testing):⁴
1. PFAS (“Forever Chemicals”): – Detected in Carthage, Robbins, and Southern Pines water systems – These industrial chemicals don’t break down naturally and can accumulate over time – EWG health guideline: near-zero (EPA legal limit is higher)⁵
2. Hexavalent Chromium (Chromium-6): – Found in Southern Pines and Robbins systems – This is the chemical featured in the movie “Erin Brockovich” – EWG health guideline: 0.02 ppb (EPA has no enforceable limit yet)⁶
3. Disinfection Byproducts (HAAs & TTHMs): – Detected in all Moore County systems (Southern Pines, Carthage, Aberdeen, Robbins) – Form when chlorine (used to disinfect water) reacts with organic matter – All systems meet EPA limits, but EWG suggests lower levels for long-term health⁷
